Waris Shah – Ishq da Waris

Syed Waris Shah the creator of Punjab’s most popular legend is himself too, a legendary figure; a consummate artiste, deeply learned in Sufi and domestic cultural lore, his verse is a treasure-trove of Punjabi phrases, idioms and sayings

[Note for WoP readers: Punjabi as a language has mostly not been recognized – not even by Punjabis themselves – as a language. Our young generation feels more convenient and sometimes honored to express themselves in Urdu, rather than in Punjabi their mother tongue. The elite mostly consider this as a language of the menials and illiterate rural folk. This in spite of the fact that Punjabi is as rich a language as any other advanced language in the world. Ghazal, Gazelle and Tina Sani

Many artists have been singing ghazals and some have earned a great name in the history of ghazal recitals. These include the classical, semi classical as well as the popular singers of the movie world. However, when we talk of ghazal in music, it needs to be emphasized that ghazal singing is a distinct art from classical singing, for skilled classical singers are not necessarily good ghazal singers as well.
And when it comes to a rendition of the lyrics into art of ghazal singing, then among the contemporary artists nobody can do it as perfectly as that sober and husk-voiced lady Tina Sani. With her melodious voice, she throbs the heart of millions of Pakistanis and is country’s undisputed Queen of Melody.
Another reason for her success as a performer is her ability to communicate; so that even when singing the likes of Zauq, she does not lose the audience – a skill, which, in fact is integral to the art of ghazal and classical singing.

Ghazalis a poetic form. It uses couplets which share a rhyme and a refrain. Each line must share the same meter.

Etymologically, the word refers to “the mortal cry of a gazelle”.

The structural requirements of ghazal are more stringent than most other poetic forms, traditionally written in Urdu, English or other languages. In its style and content it is a genre that has proved itself capable of an extraordinary variety of expression around its central theme of love and separation. Many consider it as the principal poetic form which the Persian civilization offered to the eastern Islamic world. (more…)

What a billion Muslims think

Just look around. What we have in common is much more than what we do not – notwithstanding what the Bushes and Bin Ladens of this world would have you believe, that’s why this divide is such a tragedy. We Muslims want to bridge this gulf. Is the other side equally willing?

Opinion polls fascinate me. They are, if honestly conducted, perhaps the best possible way to gauge public opinion. At a time when spin is the norm and global media is controlled, manipulated and dictated by powerful cliques, corporate interests and governments, it’s not easy to get a clear picture on any given issue. This is especially true when the story involves marginalized minorities and dispossessed groups. And of late the Muslims, currently the world’s favorite punching bag, have been at the receiving end.

After the spectacular assassination of Marxism and disintegration of Soviet Union, the West found itself a new enemy in Islam. The 9/11 attacks in the US and 7/7 attacks in the UK were only excuses, not the causes, to hasten this process. They might have contributed in the current hysteria against everything Islamic but they never were the Original Sin as we’ve been given to believe. (more…)

However, if you are only after Jihad against Eretz Israel by the means of media war after the conventional weapons were not successful, please do not bother. I don’t want to have anything to do with any holy war – wars are not holy. No matter if they are won or lost.

E.g. “…It is United States that profits from Israel, rather than the opposite. Israel got some 120 million € in 2007, but open brain drain is its prerequisite. Astonishing number of 25% of the Israeli researchers have moved to the United States – and this figure does not yet include the people with double citizenship. The next largest drain of researchers is 12.2% from Canada, 4.3% from Netherlands, and 4.2% from Italy.

The population of Arabs under the Israeli government increased ten-fold in only 57 years. Palestinian life expectancy increased from 48 to 72 years in 1967-95. The death rate decreased by over 2/3 in 1970-90 and the Israeli medical campaigns decreased the child death rate from a level of 60 per 1000 in 1968 to 15 per 1000 in 2000 at the West bank.
