Revolution in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia?

The overthrow of the Saudi royals is finally a possibility. In an excerpt from a new Brookings Institution briefing book for Obama’s second term, Bruce Riedel on what a catastrophe it would be for Obama.
Saudi Arabia is the world’s last absolute monarchy. Like Louis XIV, King Abdullah has complete authority to do as he likes. But while a revolution in Saudi Arabia is still not likely, the Arab Awakening has made one possible for the first time, and it could come in President Obama’s second term.
Revolutionary change in the kingdom would be a disaster for American interests across the board. Saudi Arabia is America’s oldest ally in the Middle East, a partnership that dates to 1945. Obama should ensure the best possible intelligence available to see a crisis coming and then try to ride the storm.

The United States has no serious option for heading off a revolution if it is coming; we are already too deeply wedded to the kingdom. Obama should ensure the best possible intelligence is available to see a crisis coming and then try to ride the storm.

Still , the kingdom of Saudi Arabia is a proven survivor. Two earlier Saudi kingdoms were defeated by the Ottoman Empire and eradicated. The Sauds came back. They survived a wave of revolutions against Arab monarchies in the 1950s and 1960s. A jihadist coup attempt in 1979 seized the Grand Mosque in Mecca but was crushed. Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda staged a four-year insurrection to topple the Sauds and failed less than a decade ago. Saudi al Qaeda cadres remain in the kingdom and next door in Yemen.

Today the Arab Awakening presents the kingdom with its most severe test to date. The same demographic challenges that prompted revolution in Egypt and Yemen, a very young population and very high underemployment, apply in Saudi Arabia. Extreme gender discrimination, long-standing regional differences, and a restive Shia minority add to the explosive potential. In recognition of their vulnerability, the Saudi royals have spent more than $130 billion since the Arab Awakening began to try to buy off dissent at home. They have made cosmetic reforms to let women sit in a powerless consulting council.

Abroad they have sent tanks and troops across the King Fahd Causeway to stifle revolution in Bahrain, brokered a political deal in Yemen to replace Ali Abdullah Salih with his deputy, and sought closer unity among the six Gulf Cooperation Council monarchies. They also have invited Jordan and Morocco to join the kings’ club. But they are pragmatists too and have backed revolutions in Libya and Syria that fight old enemies of the kingdom.

If an awakening takes place in Saudi Arabia, it will probably look a lot like the revolutions in the other Arab states. Already demonstrations, peaceful and violent, have wracked the oil rich Eastern Province for more than a year. These are Shia protests and thus atypical of the rest of the kingdom. Shia dissidents in ARAMCO, the Saudi oil company, also have used cyberwarfare to attack its computer systems, crashing more than 30,000 work stations this August. They probably received Iranian help.

Much more disturbing to the royals would be protests in Sunni parts of the kingdom. These might start in the so-called Quran Belt north of the capital, where dissent is endemic, or in the poor Asir province on the Yemeni border. Once they begin, they could snowball and reach the major cities of the Hejaz, including Jeddah, MeccaTaif, and Medina. The Saudi opposition has a vibrant information technology component that could ensure rapid communication of dissent within the kingdom and to the outside world.

The critical defender of the regime would be the National Guard. Abdullah has spent his life building this Praetorian elite force. The United States has trained and equipped it with tens of billions in helicopters and armored vehicles. But the key unknown is whether the Guard will shoot on its brothers and sisters in the street. It may fragment or it may simply refuse to suppress dissent if it is largely peaceful, especially at the start.

The succession issue adds another layer of complication. Every succession in the kingdom since its founder, Abdel Aziz bin Saud, died in 1953 has been to his brothers. King Abdullah and Crown Prince Salman are the end of the brood; only a couple of possible remaining half brothers are suitable. Both the king and crown prince are ill, and both are often unfit for duty. If Abdullah and/or Salman die as unrest begins—a real possibility—and a succession crisis ensues, then the kingdom could be even more vulnerable to revolution.

As in other Arab revolutions, the opposition revolutionaries will not be united on anything except ousting the monarchy. There will be secular democrats but also al Qaeda elements in the opposition. Trying to pick and choose will be very difficult. The unity of the kingdom could collapse as the Hejaz separates from the rest, the east falls to Shia, and the center becomes a jihadist stronghold.

For the United States, revolution in Saudi Arabia would be a game changer. While the U.S. can live without Saudi oil, China, India, Japan, and Europe cannot. Any disruption in Saudi oil exports—whether due to unrest, cyberattacks, or a new regime’s decision to reduce exports substantially—will have a major impact on the global economy. In addition, the CIA war against al Qaeda is heavily dependent on the kingdom: Saudi intelligence operations foiled the last two attacks by al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula on the American homeland. The U.S. military training mission in the kingdom, founded in 1953, is the largest of its kind in the world. The Saudis also have been a key player in containing Iran for decades.

The other monarchs of Arabia, meanwhile, would be in jeopardy if revolution comes to Saudi Arabia. The Sunni minority in Bahrain could not last without Saudi money and tanks. Despite all their money, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates are city states that would be unable to defend themselves against a revolutionary regime in what had been the kingdom. The Hashemite dynasty in Jordan would be at risk as well without Saudi and Gulf money and oil. Only Oman is probably isolated and strong enough to endure.

America has no serious options for effecting gradual reform in the kingdom. The Saudis fear, probably rightly, that real power sharing is impossible in an absolutist state. But we should plan very quietly for the worst. The intelligence community should be directed to make internal developments, not just counterterrorism, its top priority in the kingdom now. We cannot afford a surprise like Iran in 1978, and we need to know the players in the opposition, especially the Wahhabi clerics, in depth. This will be a formidable challenge, but it is essential to preparing for a very dark swan.

Bruce Riedel is director of Brookings new Intelligence Project. He has served as an adviser in the White House to the last four presidents. His next book,Avoiding Armageddon: America, India and Pakistan to the Brink and Back, will be published this month.

Wahhabi Doctrine: Origin and the Manifest under House of Saud [3 of 3]

Turks who had taken refuge in the Kaaba, to take advantage of the edict that no blood was to be shed in the holy precincts, were surrounded and killed to the last man. The courtyard of the Kaaba was a pool of fresh flowing Turkish blood. Please remember, the Kaaba too is not in Najd but in Hejaz, the beloved homeland of the Holy Prophet. .

For those unable to access YouTube the following is a description printed at the website.

“Uploaded on Sep 24, 2008

We start with the name of Allah the Lord of the worlds, and thereafter. This is a book called Umara al-Baladil-Haram authored by the headmaster of the scholars in Mekka and the sheikh of its speakers, the Mufti of the Shafi^ies, our master Ahmad bnu Zayni Dahlan who died in 1304 Hijri.

This book is printed by ad-Dar al-Mutahidah for Publishing. On page 297 the author said: The Story of the People of al-Taif and what they Encountered from al-Wahhabiyyah. Then he said: and when they [al-Wahhabiyyah] came into al-Taif, they killed people indiscriminately including the elderly, the children, the subjects and the princes, the high ranked and the poor.

They [al-Wahhabiyyah] slaughtered infants at their mothers chests. They climbed into houses and kicked out those who were hiding killing them all. They found a group of people studying the Quran, so they killed every single one of them and anyone who was in a house. After that they attacked the shops and mosques killing anyone that was in, even the men who were in sujud praying, till they wiped out all creatures there.

Surely [al-Wahhabiyyah] will face the severe punishment of the One Who subjugated the heavens and earths.

This is the dark history of al-Wahhabiyyah, and if we want to follow the trail of their deeds through the years we would need so much time to do so, and we would speak volumes about it. It would also be more clear to us how the wahhabies have neither mercy for the young nor respect for the elderly.

They have neither shame from Allah nor from the creations. They devastate, destroy and commit all these repulsive actions in the name of Islam, while Islam is far in the clear from such people and such actions.

May Allah protect us from the Wahhabi tribulation, and may Allah uncover their truth throughout the whole world as He is the One Who is able to Do whatever He wills.”

(Ahmad Dahlan, whose description is printed, was the Mufti of Mekka in his time.)

Shias are special targets. Karbala was twice surrounded by Wahhabi armed men and all residents were murdered.

Turks who had taken refuge in the Kaaba, to take advantage of the edict that no blood was to be shed in the holy precincts, were surrounded and killed to the last man. The courtyard of the Kaaba was a pool of fresh, flowing Turkish blood. Please remember, the Kaaba too is not in Najd but in Hejaz, the beloved homeland of the Holy Prophet. (Did he foresee all this when he refused to pray for Najd?)

Let us move downstream a little more in history. All of you who have seen the movie LAWRENCE OF ARABIA have some familiarity with what is known in history as the WAHHABI REVOLT against the Osmania Empire. This movie is a story from the First World War when Turkey was allied with the Axis powers.

Those who have not seen the movie, please see it now either by getting the DVD of the movie from the market or by seeing it on YouTube by clicking on link below. It is a great movie, a must see, even if we do not like this shameful episode of Arab history.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zemmyZciOYo&feature=plcp

Please note. Orders of the Holy Quran are clear: you will not become allies of the non-believers and fight against Muslims.

I said above that in this new religion, Shias were and are special targets for murder. Let us come to even more recent history. The Taliban gained power in Afghanistan after withdrawal of the Russians.

During their two years rule they came out with full hostility against Shias. The Afghan population includes ethnic Hazaras who comprise Shia population. In 1989 the Taliban surrounded Mazar-e-Sharif and massacred 5,000 Shias. Somewhat later they again surrounded the Shia population of Bamiyan and committed the same atrocities.

They also enslaved their women and took them away as sex slaves.

Next let us see what is happening in Pakistan today. Hardly any day passes without a news of the atrocity or murder of “Mushrikeen.” Sunni ulema are killed. Shrines and mosques are bombed. Schools are destroyed. Bombs are also set off in funeral processions carrying bodies of victims of an attack.

There has been a tradition of Shias travelling to Iran for ziarah of their holy places. They travel to Quetta and take a bus to Iran. Religious killers wait in ambush at a lonely spot on the route. They stop the bus, disembark passengers, line them up on the road side, men women and children, and shoot them all. Don’t leave it to me to report here what we read daily in Pakistani newspapers and see on Pakistani TV in all its gruesome details.

What we are witnessing in Pakistan is a non-stop show of the utmost level of degradation to which human beings can fall in fulfillment of their religious obligations, men who claim to represent the “true” faith of our Prophet (SAWW).

Leaders and members of all our mainstream religious parties are fellow travelers in promoting these unlimited atrocities. They parrot the same stock explanation for each and all these atrocities saying these are done by American agents and are paid for with dollars. (To say with Petro-dollars would be closer to the truth.)

Now let me make an explanation to clear up a general misconception. Are all those who subscribe to the religion of Abdul Wahab insane killers? No, but listen. Let us take any belief system, such as our own Islam. Islam has its codes: believe in Allah, believe in the Quran, pray five times a day, contribute zakat, go on Haj etc.

As a Muslim, I subscribe to all the requirements as an intellectual obligation. But do I also actually fulfill all these obligations in practice? No. I have no time for namaz, cheat on zakat, maulvi saheb reads the Quran which is good enough for me and so on. This is so for followers of Abdel Wahab also.

THEY UNCONDITIONALLY SUBSCRIBE TO ALL HIS TEACHINGS but all of them do not necessarily put on a suicide jacket and go and blow up school girls. Why don’t they do that if they believe this is an obligation? Because they can sit back and pray: Allah forgive us for our failings, for our inaction to fulfill our religious obligations of murder and atrocity!

And more importantly, gravity of these sins of omission can be reduced by VIGOROUSLY PREACHING THE DOCTRINE OF SHIRK AND MURDER OF MUSLIMS AS PER ABDUL WAHAB! This will hopefully egg on the killers and affirm their virtue as killers. The principle we can discern is this:

All religious killers are followers of Abdel Wahab, but all followers of Abdel Wahab are not active killers.

After an overall review of the movement, Prof Algar of The University of California, Berkeley, writes the following conclusion in his book WAHHABISM:

Wahabbis have seriously distorted fundamental teachings of Islam; functioned for many decades as the ideological mainstay of a regime which has squandered the wealth of the Arabian peninsula; vilified Muslims both Sunni and Shia, as non-Muslims and shed their blood; introduced or exacerbated division and strife wherever they have gone; destroyed a significant part of the cultural patrimony of all Muslims, first in the Hejaz and then in places such as Chechnya, Bosnia and Kosova; and finally failed to contribute anything either to the intellectual elaboration of Islam or to the advancement of its political and civilizational agenda in the present age.

Detailed studies on the Saudi rulers are well documented in many reputable books. A book THE HOUSE OF SAUD was published in 1982.

This book was written by journalist and researcher David Holden. He found out too much of the dirty story of the Sauds. He was murdered in Egypt in 1977 by Saudi agents. It was a clean and clever job. The killers disappeared without trace. But the murder accomplished much. Much of the information held by Holden did not come to light. However, another journalist, Richard Jones took up the work and it was published in 1982.

In brief the book tells us that: The House of Saud ruled the region of the Najd. They dispossesed the House of Rasheed through the use of a fundamentalist Islamic religion called Wahhabism. Then they conquered the Hejaz, ruled by the Hashemites. The leader of the Najd was Ibne Saud. He lived a long and fruitful life, having over 50 sons (no mention of daughters though). When he died in 1953, his sons took over and have ruled since. The current sovereign Abdullah is one of his oldest.

 Concluded.

Wahhabi Doctrine: Origin and the Manifest under House of Saud [1 of 3]

During 1980s Salfi Islam was used as a political and military tool to achieve the agenda set by the US and her allies including the Saudis as their principal financiers. Once they succeeded to achieve their goal, for them the Mujahideen were now a spent force. However, the Saudi rulers from the day one had been the principal partners of USA’s ‘Jihad’ against the former USSR.
Now this partnership has morphed into a much closer cooperation between the Saudis and Shaitan-e-Buzurg or the great Satan [as late Imam Ayatullah Khomeini used to call America], whereby Saudis are spending their petro dollars in furthering the over all objectives principal being a domination of Wahhabism all over the Muslim world and the US is trying to achieve its domination over the whole world.
An agenda which the US Neocons [and under Barack Obama too these are as active as they have been under the presidency of Bush junior] have taken it to their heart to achieve by any means.

The upcoming post is an excellent exposition of the terrible manifestations of Wahhabism as seen in most Muslim countries and elsewhere. These though arose from the deserts of Najd, have, however, multiplied many folds like the mythical head of hydra after the house of Saud went into a marriage of covenience, or rather the convenience of terror between the Saudis and the successive US administrations.

Since YouTube is still under a ban in Pakistan, am not in position to view this or the other videos which form an essential part of this write-up and hence its contents in full cannot be subjected to an unbiased, middle of the road, neutral assessment.

Our PC mentor ZJeddy has been kind enough to refer us a software called UltraSurf. My experience about Ultrasurf has, however, not been good enough. Whereas in the first effort it works fine, yet in subsequent runnings errors crop up.

Since my knowledge of religion is very limited, I would definitely have preffered to access the books or other literature on the subject, however, since there is no mention of any source, therefore, I had no recourse left but to google the Al-Khwasir incident. (more…)

Will War on Islam End in 2013?

Today – eleven and one-half years after the controlled demolition of the World Trade Center launched the War on Islam – that war is bogged down in the mother of all quagmires.
The neoconservatives who orchestrated 9/11 hoped that their stealth war on Islam would achieve quick regime change throughout the Middle East, and break the back of Islamic political movements worldwide.
To that end, they invaded Iraq and Afghanistan in order to surround Iran with US military bases. They intended to invade Iran, and destroy its Islamic revolution, by 2005 at the latest.
But the heroic resistance of the Iraqis, Lebanese and Palestinians, and shrewd strategic moves by Iran – together with ideological challenges by the peace movement, the 9/11 truth movement, and the anti-Zionist movement – slowed them down.

I used to celebrate the New Year in the usual way: By staying up late and drinking too much.

Then I came to Islam, weaned myself from the bottle, and changed my habits…many of them, anyway.

But I still can’t get over the habit of wishing for better things in the coming year.

Possibly the best thing that could happen in 2013 would be a clean, decisive end to the so-called “war on terror,” which is actually a low-intensity war of deception targeting Muslims and the religion of Islam.

***

Public opinion polls show that the vast majority of the world’s Muslims know that the “War on Terror” is a barely-disguised War on Islam. And it isn’t just Muslims who understand this. So do all serious Western strategic thinkers.

One of the few who is willing to say it openly is James Schall, Professor of Government at Georgetown University and Hoover Institute strategist: “I always thought it was a mistake not to say what Iraq really was, that is, a war against an expanding Islam.”

But today – eleven and one-half years after the controlled demolition of the World Trade Center launched the War on Islam – that war is bogged down in the mother of all quagmires.

By August of 2007, neocon front man Dick Cheney realized that his last opportunity to invade Iran was slipping from his grasp. So Cheney’s rogue network attempted to steal nuclear weapons from the US arsenal at Minot Air Force Base, with the intention of using those weapons, whether in the US itself or the Middle East, in order to trigger all-out war on Iran.

Stupid move. The nuke-thieves got caught. Dozens were suicided or met “accidental” deaths.

The command structure of the US military does not look kindly on people who try to steal nuclear weapons – even if the thief-in-chief is the Vice President of the United States.

Since then, the US military has closed ranks against the neocons. The invasion of Iran – the chief objective of the 9/11 conspirators – has been postponed indefinitely, to the infinite chagrin of Netanyahu and his “American” allies. And the larger War on Islam has lost its focus.

But how can it end? When nations are at war, the duly-constituted authorities of both nations can end the war by signing a peace treaty. But since the aggressors (with a few exceptions like Schall) refuse to admit that they are waging war on Islam, and since Islam has no “duly constituted authority” capable of negotiating anything, it is hard to imagine how a peace treaty could end hostilities.

To understand how the War on Islam could end, we must first understand what is really at stake. What is this war really about?

It is certainly not about terrorism. Even if we provisionally accept the official story of 9/11 (which is now doubted by the majority of the world), an American is more than ten times more likely to be struck by lightning, or drown in a bathtub, than to be killed by any kind of terrorist. And according to the FBI, radical Muslims only commit 6% of terrorist attacks – less than radical Jews, and vastly less than radical leftists and hispanics.

And if “terrorism” means “the intentional slaughter of civilians,” the US and Israel commit thousands of times more terrorism than all the Muslims of the world put together. According to studies by Gideon Polya, M.D., the US and its ally, Great Britain, have murdered roughly eight million Iraqis alone since 1950. The total number of victims of US and Israeli state terrorism since World War II, what scholar William Blum calls “the American Holocaust,” is in the tens of millions.

So if it isn’t really about “terrorism” then what’s the actual bone of contention? The short answer: Demographics and religiosity.

Islam is the fastest-growing religion in the world, in part through conversions, but mostly through demographics. Even though Muslim birthrates are falling in most parts of the world, they aren’t falling quite as fast as Western birthrates, which are now below replacement levels and heralding an impending demographic collapse. (Russia and Italy, for example, are projected to lose half their population within a few generations).

Why are Muslim birthrates relatively high? Because Islam is a religion of what we might call “traditional family values.”

Sexuality under Islam is limited to community-sanctioned procreative relationships (otherwise known as marriage), and the various vices that have largely destroyed the family in the West – alcohol, drugs, promiscuity, open homosexuality, widespread divorce, egotism, materialism, consumerism and so on – are only making limited progress in their war on the Islamic family.

So since Islamic families are relatively happier and more stable, they have more children which means more Muslims.

And that scares some Western policy-makers, especially those who have a strong personal attachment to the state of Israel. The demographic tilt towards Islam will inevitably result in a readjustment of the global balance of power – raising questions about continued Western control of Middle Eastern and Central Asian energy resources, and even thornier questions about the future of Occupied Palestine.

The perceived problem isn’t just the demographics, it’s the potential for Islamic unity turning into a global political force which, in tandem with the rise of China and India, could rob the West of its current status as global hegemon.

And it is the shared religiosity of Muslims, the social bonds fostered by religion that draw Muslims together and offer them a chance to readjust the global balance of power in their favor.

Proponents of the War on Islam cannot admit this openly. They cannot say “our real objective is to damage the religion of Islam, break up the Islamic family, and try to reduce the global Muslim population.” They cannot admit that their real objective is genocide.

So they are waging a war of deception. By smearing Muslims as subhuman “terrorists” they can covertly commit genocide while pretending to be the good guys.

The neocons have squandered their opportunity for a sudden, decisive blow against Islam. That means that only two alternatives remain: Either the low-intensity War on Islam will continue indefinitely, with its endless drone killings, false-flag terror strikes, genocidal media propaganda, attempts to provoke intra-Muslim strife, assassinations of Iranian scientists, and so on; or it will end quickly and cleanly with a Western confession that the whole “War on Terror” has been a big lie.

The second alternative would be much cheaper, in terms of blood and treasure.

Here is how it could happen: Senior US military commanders, tired of spilling American blood for Israel, organize a counter-coup against those complicit in the 9/11 operation.

They declare a state of emergency and arrest several dozen current and retired military and intelligence officers, a host of politicians including most of the leading neoconservatives, the owners and decision-makers of the major mainstream media outlets, several of the planet’s wealthiest individuals, and key unregistered agents of Israel who operate behind the facade of America’s leading Jewish organizations. Seizing control of the newspapers and airwaves, they reveal the truth about 9/11 to a shocked, outraged world. Swift military-style trials elicit confessions and convictions.
Islam is declared innocent. Zionism is guilty. Palestine is liberated. And the war is finally over.

Will it happen in 2013?

If YOU work hard enough spreading the truth about 9/11 and the phony “War on Terror,” anything is possible.

What have they done to my hajj?

When I look around I see the concrete jungle dominating the skyline and imposing itself over the house of God – the Ka’bah – and I feel betrayed by the custodians of the holy sites.
If I want to see skyscrapers I can take a quick trip to the Docklands in London. I did not come here to be shown another city of tall buildings, just like Las Vegas or New York.
In these places I find no spirituality. I am pretty certain God does not want his holy site to be desecrated in this fashion either….

THE  SPIRITUALITY OF THE MUSLIM PILGRIMAGE IS BEING RUINED BY SKYSCRAPERS AND TRAFFIC JAMS AROUND THE HOLY SITE, WHILE RISING COSTS MEAN IT IS A RITUAL THAT ONLY THE RICH CAN AFFORD

·

by Ajmal Masroor

·

Today I have completed my hajj – the annual pilgrimage that brings together millions of people in the holy city of Mecca. I am extremely worried that hajj may have lost its true spiritual meaning. I may have attained a personal triumph for completing the rituals but the economic, environmental and human cost is staggering. I lament the speed of change that is sweeping this city, obliterating history and heritage in its path.

Hajj is a spiritual journey of each and every pilgrim that merges into the journey of the masses. It is the coming together of every nation that makes hajj so special. It is personal yet collective. I came here with a clear focus: to centre God in my life. I would make a pledge to live a more conscientious life. I would care for my fellow human beings as I care for myself. Hajj is about an individual and collective renewal of the faith.

But when I look around I see the concrete jungle dominating the skyline and imposing itself over the house of God – the Ka’bah – and I feel betrayed by the custodians of the holy sites. If I want to see skyscrapers I can take a quick trip to the Docklands in London. I did not come here to be shown another city of tall buildings, just like Las Vegas or New York. In these places I find no spirituality. I am pretty certain God does not want his holy site to be desecrated in this fashion either.

The cost of hajj has trebled over the last five years, making the pilgrimage unaffordable for ordinary people. The new high-rise five-star hotels surrounding the Ka’bah are available to those who can afford them. I noticed this year that hajj has already become a ritual for the super rich. The poorer people are being priced out by the unfair and disproportionate price hike. The essence of hajj lies in creating equality between all people by putting on two unstitched white pieces of cloth. This instantly eliminates social and economic inequality. The current trend is making equality a distant dream. I came to hajj to give up material pursuits but materialism is here in full force. There is no spirituality in this.

Hajj for me is an invitation from God to visit his house. The infrastructure around the house of God is being built without any serious environmental consideration. Cars, gas-guzzling jeeps and diesel-operated buses are crowding the surrounding area. Making Mecca car-free should be at the forefront of public transport infrastructure strategy. People spend a lot of time stuck in the traffic jams; I spent half of my time waiting for my bus to take me to the holy site. I would have rather spent that time in the house of God in meditation, reflection and prayers. I found no spirituality in traffic jams.

In Mina, Muzdalifah and Arafat, the three most important places that form the pilgrim path, there are more plastic bottles, wraps and bags strewn around than many cities produce in a year. The curse of plastic has serious ecological consequences that will outlive all the pilgrims here in Mecca. The environmental damage caused by people littering these sites is in direct contradiction to the teachings of Islam. There are billboard messages reminding pilgrims that “Cleanliness is part of faith”, yet most simply ignore these words of wisdom. The hajj authority must takes serious steps to curb littering by introducing hefty fines for pilgrims and tour operators. They should ban plastic. Pilgrimage is about reconnecting with our humble origins and our ultimate destination. Being careless about the environment is the antithesis of spirituality.

At this rate, hajj soon will become a materialistic ritual, a showground for the super rich to display their wealth and nobility. I badly miss the hajj that reconnects me with the prophet Abraham and helps me to centre God in my life.
